"Perhaps the best jazz singer alive today"

“Stallings sounds like Carmen McRae with some Dinah Washington sass thrown in.” Philadelphia Inquirer

Keeping with our tradition of bringing the country’s best jazz vocalists t0 BendBroadband’s Jazz at the Oxford, we are thrilled that Mary Stallings will grace our stage. Stallings, a San Francisco native, grew up singing in the gospel choir of the First African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, but by her teen years, she was singing in several Bay Area night clubs, performing with the likes of Ben Webster, Cal Tjader, Red Mitchell and Earl Hines.

Before graduating high school, Mary joined Louis Jordan’s Tympani Five, and went on to perform with Dizzie Gillespie at the 1965 Monterey Jazz Festival. She has shared the bill with such luminaries as Ella Fitzerald, Joe Williams and Tony Bennett, and also spent three years with the Count Basie Orchestra.

Mary has released several wonderful albums, with a large spectrum of her work released in recent times, from 1994’s I Waited For You (Concord Jazz) to 2005’s Remember Love.

Stallings has been backed by Portland’s Mel Brown several times before, so for her performances in Bend, he was specifically requested, along with the great pianist Tony Pacini and innovative bassist Ed Bennett. A special night is in store for those of you who appreciate great voices.
